Incorrect Battery Charge Shown after Inserting a new Battery

The information provided is for help with Commtest Instruments products:

  • vbSeries® instruments, Profiler instrument

SYMPTOMS

When a new battery pack is inserted into the instrument the percentage charge and voltage values no longer match.

CAUSE

The vbClassic instruments do not use intelligent batteries and so cannot identify the percentage of capacity of the new battery. However the actual voltage value displayed in the instrument will be accurate. The % value will be in error. In a vbX instrument, such as a vb7, this problem may indicate a faulty battery or an instrument failure. Proflash the instrument and determine if the problem remains.

SOLUTION

To get the voltage value and the percentage value to realign you need to perform a battery recondition as outlined below. Please note that vbX Lithium Ion batteries do not require reconditioning, and the function described below is not provided for on vbX instruments.

Reconditioning a Battery

  • From the Main Menu press [7] Battery Management.
  • Press [1] Charger Control then press [2] to recondition the battery. Discharging is indicated by the flashing 'DISCHARGING' message on the screen.

Inserting a Fully Charged Battery into the Instrument

  • From the Main Menu press [7] Battery Management.
  • Press [1] Charger Control then press [3] Fresh Battery Inserted. This will ensure that the battery percentage is set to 100%.
